Humans are a company's greatest asset. If you have an amazing team behind your brand, then the chances of success are very high. So those who manage these people should have the ability to exercise a variety of skills.

Human resources management, according to Erasmus, Schenk, Tshilongamulenzhe and Swanepoel (2014:6) refer to "the management of people in relation to their work and the organisations where they work.”  The primary task of an HR manager is to ensure that an organisation's human resources are utilised and managed effectively in order to achieve the organisation's objectives and thus to gain and sustain competitive advantage (Nieman & Bennett, 2014:244). In a nutshell, the role of the human resources manager is to find new talent, train and develop their skills, assess that development, ensure that labour laws are adhered to and maintain the health and welfare of employees.

HR may be further divided into the following sub-categories:

  • HR Administration: ensuring that records relating to employment are kept up to date.
  • HR Policies and Procedures: ensuring that policies are formulated and communicated to staff and complied with
  • Industrial Relations: keeping abreast of labour laws
  • Team Development: facilitating team building activities
  • Change Management: ensure that all change is done in a fair manner and staff support is given
  • Compensation and Benefits
  • Competency Management: ensuring that role profiles are maintained
  • HR Management Information: ensuring the integrity of HR data
  • Performance Management
  • Recruitment
  • Training and Development

We see that the role of human resources managers encompasses many different duties and responsibilities, which is why it is imperative to ensure that the right people play this role in an organisation.

One of our students, Chantal Daniels, who is an HR practitioner said the following about her job: "Working in the human resource field, has allowed me to fulfil the passion that I have, in assisting fellow employees by making their work experience an enjoyable journey within the organisation. I have gained a wealth of experience both on a personal level and professionally and I can confidently say that I have grown into a human resource generalist. I eagerly look forward to my future and now with the support of BMT College, my future can only get brighter.”
